A Culinary and Migratory Journey through Italian Heritage in Queensland and the Northern Territory
ItaloWorld Inc. proudly presents "Nonne’s Legacy: A Culinary and Migratory Journey through Italian Heritage in Queensland and the Northern Territory", a unique initiative to preserve and celebrate the rich culinary traditions and migration stories of 107 Italian nonne [grandmothers] who have made Queensland and the Northern Territory their home.
This project is not just about recipes; it’s about honouring the lives and journeys of Italian migrants who brought with them the flavours and stories of their homeland. By drawing inspiration from the growing interest in reconnecting with one’s cultural roots, we aim to create a cultural and historical archive which captures the essence of Italian heritage as it has been preserved and transformed in Australia.
Through this initiative, we aim to document 107 cherished recipes, one from each Italian province, covering every part of Italy and its old traditions. This collection will include a mix of entrees, main courses, and desserts, offering a complete culinary journey which reflects the full spectrum of Italy’s rich gastronomic heritage. Each recipe is a portal to the past, connecting readers not only to the food but also to the regions, towns, and traditions from which these dishes originated.
This project taps into the powerful desire many people have to explore their ancestral roots, encouraging descendants of Italian migrants and others interested in Italian culture to delve deeper into their heritage. The stories in "Nonne’s Legacy" go beyond the kitchen, offering insights into the migratory journeys that brought these traditions to Australia. Readers will be invited to explore the historical and cultural context of each recipe, fostering a deeper connection to their Italian heritage.
The project will culminate in a publication which captures the essence of Italian culture in Australia, blending culinary heritage with the heartfelt stories of migration and adaptation. This cultural archive will serve as both a cookbook and a historical document, celebrating the resilience and contributions of the Italian community in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Are you a Nonna who brought a beloved recipe with you when you migrated to Australia? Or perhaps you are the descendant of one such Nonna, who has passed down her culinary secrets and stories to you? We invite you to contribute to "Nonne’s Legacy: A Culinary and Migratory Journey through Italian Heritage in Queensland and the Northern Territory".
At this early stage, we ask for the following information:
- Nonna's name (no need for the family name)
- Year of birth
- Town, Province, and Region of birth
- Year of arrival in Australia
- Name of dish
- A brief 100 word description of the dish.
By sharing this initial information, you’ll be taking the first step in preserving your legacy and ensuring your story is celebrated as part of our shared cultural heritage. The final selection of stories and recipes will be carefully curated to include a diverse mix of entrees, main courses, and desserts, offering a complete culinary journey through Italy.Â
This project is more than just a cookbook; it’s a journey through time and space, connecting the past with the present and offering a path for future generations to explore their roots.

This schedule ensures that we carefully curate and honour the contributions of our nonne, with plenty of time for the community to engage with and celebrate these invaluable stories and recipes.
